What is the Enneagram Test?
It is a model that describes the individual differences based on nine (from the Greek ‘ennea’) types of people. And, it is illustrated by an enneagram itself – a geometric form with nine sides.
Thus, the Enneagram Test describes nine types of personality which are interrelated and easily observable in the day-to-day. It’s a model that has been widely used in companies for personnel selection purposes. Where does it come from?
Sources indicate that researches found similar models of the Enneagram back on the fourth century, in the city of Alexandria.
However, the modern Enneagram was devised by the Bolivian researcher, Oscar Ichazo, on his work “Enneagon of Ego Fixations” in the 1950s, when he started teaching it in personal development workshops. Ichazo’s personal development program included the test and the application of other symbols and symbolisms. It began first in Chile and introduced later on in the United States, already called Personality Enneagram.
Claudio Naranjo, a psychiatrist from Chile, learned the Enneagram Test from courses given by Ichazo and also took it to the United States, but with some changes resulting from his personal style. Naranjo started to teach it for very diversified audiences.
Today, after a number of enhancements, the Enneagram Test has become a well-known model of self-knowledge. It’s a very effective technique to strengthen the positive aspects of our personal and professional behaviors, in addition to guiding in how to overcome behaviors considered ‘weak”. The Types of Personality in the Enneagram
The Enneagram presents nine types of personality:
1) Perfectionist, Reformer
The core idea for the first type is perfection. Therefore, they focus all attention on mistake, on what must be corrected. Their ego fixation is resentment.

2) Helper, Manipulative
The core point for the second type is to be loved by others. Therefore, they are called helper and will help with whatever situations they can.

3) Achiever, Competitive
Competitiveness is the core idea for the third type. That is, they want to succeed at any cost. They try to be successful and this is their main goal.
Statement: “I need to be successful”.
The individualist aims the self-knowledge, self-understanding; therefore, they often develop original projects and ideas. On the negative side, they may be too melancholic and introspective.
Statement: “I’m unique”.
5) Investigator, Thinker
The core idea for type five is omniscience. With an accurate and consistent observation, they always try to understand more the world and people in an endless circle, in order to use the knowledge obtained and learn more.
Statement: “I need to understand the world”.
They are the skeptical. The representation of one single type can be noticed on both, positive and negative way in this trend.
Statement: “I’m skeptical”.
7) Enthusiast, Impulsive
The enthusiast type is one of the most easily recognizable. The core idea is the search for happiness, the search for joy. They are usually very funny and optimistic, and are always ready to listen to a new idea, to dream of a new project. In the negative way, they can be impulsive and volatile, heading towards a new dream every time.
Statement: “I’m happy and open to new ideas”.
8) Challenger, Leader
Type eight is that person that is always challenging others. With this single trait, they already present a great tendency to lead groups and people. They are action-driven and can positively motivate people to reach their goals and the goals of the group.
Statement: “I must be strong”.
9) Peacemaker, Preservationist
As the meaning of the word itself, type nine is the individual who search for peace, resolution of conflicts, disputes and disagreements. Their great tendency is to search for and create unity among people.
Statement: “I’m at peace”.
